A 67-year-old motorcyclist is dead after a young driver turned an SUV directly into his path in Volusia County during Biketoberfest.
A 67-year-old Port Orange man was killed Friday afternoon after a 25-year-old driver turned left directly into the path of his motorcycle at a Volusia County intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision happened at approximately 12:13 p.m. on October 16, 2026, at the intersection of Tomoka Farms Road (County Road 415) and Avocado Drive.
According to FHP, the driver of a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling north on Tomoka Farms Road when she attempted to turn left onto Avocado Drive. The maneuver put her SUV directly in the path of the southbound motorcycle.
The front of the SUV collided with the front of the motorcycle.
The rider was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Troopers reported that he was wearing a helmet.
The 25-year-old South Daytona woman driving the SUV suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
The deadly danger of turning left in front of a motorcycle
This crash is a devastating reminder of one of the most dangerous situations motorcyclists face on the road: a driver turning left across their path.
Drivers sometimes misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or distance, fail to see it altogether, or assume they have enough time to complete a turn. When a vehicle turns directly in front of an approaching motorcycle, the rider may have little time or space to avoid the collision.
Unlike the occupants of a passenger vehicle, motorcyclists have no surrounding steel frame, airbags or crumple zones to absorb the impact. Even when a rider wears a helmet, a direct collision can be fatal.
The age of the driver in this crash is part of the reported circumstances, but the central issue is the left-turn maneuver that placed the SUV in the motorcycle’s path. Drivers of every age need to understand the risks of turning across oncoming traffic.
If you’re turning left, make absolutely certain the way is clear before crossing an oncoming lane. A moment of impatience or a misjudgment can have irreversible consequences.
A sobering reminder during Biketoberfest
This fatal crash happened during Daytona Biketoberfest, when thousands of motorcyclists travel throughout Volusia County for one of Florida’s biggest motorcycle events.
The location also hits close to home for TVBikerDad. I’m staying in this very area for Biketoberfest, making this tragedy especially personal as riders gather across the region for the event.
The roads around Daytona and the surrounding communities carry a mix of local traffic, visitors unfamiliar with the area, and motorcycles traveling to rallies, events and gatherings. That makes awareness and patience especially important for everyone sharing the road.
Motorcyclists can take precautions, including riding defensively and anticipating that a driver may turn across their path. But defensive riding cannot eliminate every danger, particularly when a vehicle enters a rider’s path with little warning.
Drivers have a responsibility to look carefully for motorcycles and yield when required. A motorcycle’s smaller profile does not make it less entitled to the road.
One rider has lost his life. His family and friends are left to deal with a loss that cannot be undone.
As Biketoberfest continues, please look twice, make deliberate decisions at intersections, and never gamble with an oncoming rider’s life.
