Motorcycle “gang” members appear in court for detention hearing

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The local suspects taken into custody during last Friday’s sweep of the Thug Riders Motorcycle Club leadership appeared in court today at the Walter H. Rice Federal Building in downtown Dayton.

Though 14 suspects were arrested as part of the multi-agency federal investigation last week, only eight of them were in the Miami Valley. Prosecutors are working to have those arrested out of state extradited to Ohio to stand trial.

The judge overseeing the federal detention hearings for the eight defendants ruled that six of them — Brent Egleston, Tyler Peters, Daniel Hutten, John Smith, Brandon Fisher and Norman Beach — will remain incarcerated during the trial.

Cody Hughes and Justin Baker will wear an ankle monitor as of right now.

The defendants are accused of a long list of violent crimes, including murder, racketeering, conspiracy and blowing up a former member’s vehicle.

All eight defendants previously pled not guilty.

The crimes allegedly began in January 2019, with many taking place in Greene County.

During the sweep, federal agents recovered more than 100 firearms, 15,000 rounds of ammunition and digital data that agents say will help them expand their search for other crimes.
