CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The South Carolina Highway Patrol has released additional details about a deadly crash that happened Saturday evening on Meeting Street.

A motorcyclist was killed, and seven people were left injured after the driver of a U-Haul truck who was attempting to evade law enforcement caused the collision. The U-Haul truck driver and passenger were apprehended after the collision.

Both claimed to be sovereign citizens, meaning they believe they are not subject to the law. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the second occupant.

Officials confirmed that the female U-Haul driver was 54-year-old Margie Kathy Brown.

According to jail records, Brown is charged with improper turn; right on red, reckless homicide caused injury from vehicle, failure to stop for blue light causing bodily injury and failure to stop for blue light. Brown is currently in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

She was granted a $232.50 bond for the improper turn charge, but no bond has been granted for the remaining three charges.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the U-Haul truck at the intersection of Dorchester and Meeting Street Roads, according to the North Charleston Police Department.

The truck driver refused to stop and traveled from Dorchester Road to Interstate 26 before entering downtown Charleston via the Crosstown.

The U-Haul’s driver then turned left, moving towards King Street. Police discontinued the chase at the intersection of Columbus and King Street, but the driver kept going.

At 4:55 p.m., the U-Haul driver hit two pedestrians while traveling north in the southbound lanes of Meeting Street at Reid Street, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The U-Haul driver then swerved into the second northbound lane, hitting a 2022 Mercedes sedan. In turn, that Mercedes collided with a Honda motorcycle, which crashed into a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The two pedestrians were injured and taken to local hospitals. There were two passengers on the motorcycle, one of which died, and the other was taken to the hospital for their injuries. All three occupants of the Mercedes were taken to the hospital.

One of the U-Haul passengers was also injured, Highway Patrol explained.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the deceased. Highway Patrol is the lead investigative agency.
