Video: Road rage against bikers’ charity run ends in gunfire

One person was shot and another was injured after being hit by a truck during a “road rage incident” Saturday.

KSP Post 4 Trooper Scotty Sharp said it happened around noon near the intersection of KY 88 and St. Anthony Church Road in Clarkson.

Sharp told WBKO News the incident involved “several hundred motorcycles participating in a charity poker run and a pickup truck.”

WBKO has since learned the incident happened during the 12th annual Run for the Light Poker Run, which raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The motorcycle route begins and ends at the Munfordville Courthouse lawn.

He confirmed that one person received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. One other person was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital after being struck by the truck.

As of Sunday afternoon, WBKO has learned from a family member that a 35-year-old woman, Kayla, was hit by the truck and her neck was broken.

Her brother, Mike Turner, told WBKO she was “pretty much paralyzed from the legs down” Saturday night, but since her surgery Sunday, she can pick up her arms now.

“She’s really positive, believe it or not, and she’s in high spirits,” Turner said. “She’s actually telling people it’ll be ok and not to worry.”

The family wants to speak up about the incident to ensure the safety of other motorcyclists.

They’re also collecting monetary donations to aid in Kayla’s recovery. You can donate to the Cash App $StephenSteinmetz8.

Motorcyclist Tony Wells witnessed the incident from several motorcyclists back. He believes the truck driver was impatient and didn’t want to wait for the motorcyclists to pass by.

“He decided, just to floor it and try to shoot through them and he clipped one, maybe two [motorcycles],” he said.

Motorcyclists told Wells that the driver had a gun, “holding it up in the truck, pointing it.”

Wells said Kayla was sitting in her lane and that “she did absolutely nothing wrong.”

“Whenever he cut across, his tow mirror caught her in the upper chest space,” he recalled. “The mirror hits her in the front, she’s pinned against the backrest and it flips her off backwards over the backrest.”

Wells’ video begins minutes before the driver hit Kayla. Wells said motorcyclists began chasing the driver, so he drove into a ditch.

WBKO has learned from Derek McClure that he was the man shot. He said he heard gunshots while the truck drove into the yard, so he turned around to chase the driver.

“That that’s all I could think of, like, these are my friends. These are the people that I’ve known for years,” he said. “The whole group I knew in some way, shape or form.”

After turning around, McClure said he saw bikes falling over and his friend “laying on her back, eyes wide open and guys starting CPR on her.”

“Once I got up behind the truck, he pointed his pistol out the window at me, and popped off a round, striking me in the left shin,” he said.

McClure said he fired back, checking to make sure there were no other people or houses nearby.

After a pursuit between the two that lasted at least 20 miles, McClure said the truck stopped in front of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office blockade and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. He said he is doing okay.

It’s unclear if any arrests have been made yet. KSP Post 4 is continuing the investigation and said charges could be forthcoming.
