Another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a motorcycle ride can turn tragic.
Three Colorado motorcyclists lost their lives Tuesday afternoon on a scenic stretch of U.S. Highway 12 near Kooskia, Idaho, after authorities say a pickup truck driver crossed into their lane while attempting an illegal pass. (Idaho State Police)
According to the Idaho State Police, the crash happened around 4 p.m. when a westbound Ford F-150 entered a marked no-passing zone and crossed the double yellow line while trying to overtake another vehicle. The truck then collided head-on with three eastbound motorcycles. (Idaho State Police)
All three riders suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released their identities pending notification of family members. (Idaho State Police)
The driver of the pickup, a 60-year-old woman from Colorado Springs, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being arrested. Idaho State Police say she was booked into the Idaho County Jail on probable cause for three counts of vehicular manslaughter. (Idaho State Police)
Reports indicate all three riders were also from Colorado. Local reports have further identified two of the victims as members of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, adding another layer of tragedy to an already devastating incident. (Facebook)

When One Driver’s Decision Changes Everything
Motorcyclists hear it all the time: “Ride like you’re invisible.”
Unfortunately, crashes like this show why that advice exists.
The three riders reportedly did everything right. They were traveling in their lane on a highway when a driver chose to ignore a no-passing zone and crossed directly into their path. In situations like that, there is often little or no time for a rider to react.
For the motorcycle community, stories like this hit hard because they remind us that some of the greatest dangers we face aren’t speeding, cornering, or weather conditions. They’re the split-second decisions made by other drivers.
As riders, we can control our training, our gear, and our awareness. We can’t control the actions of someone willing to cross a double yellow line for a few seconds of convenience.
