More Than a Record: South Dakota Woman Helps Make Motorcycle History

Motorcycling has always been about more than the machines. It’s about community, shared experiences, and proving that riders can accomplish incredible things when they come together.

That spirit was on full display recently when a Rapid City, South Dakota rider helped break a world record as part of a massive gathering of women motorcyclists in Rockford, Illinois.

The event, organized by the Midwest Women Riders group, brought together an astonishing 1,433 female motorcyclists for a coordinated ride, officially setting a new world record for the largest all-female motorcycle ride ever recorded. The previous record stood at 1,002 riders, making this achievement a significant milestone in motorcycle history. (Atlas World Records)

Among those helping make history was South Dakota rider Dawn Kim Van Hoepen of Rapid City. Like hundreds of other women who traveled from across the country, she joined the ride to celebrate the growing presence of women in motorcycling and to be part of something bigger than herself. (Facebook)

Anyone who has I participated in a large group ride knows the amount of planning and coordination required. Now imagine organizing more than 1,400 motorcycles into a single, record-breaking procession. That’s exactly what happened as riders from different backgrounds, age groups, and riding styles came together with one common goal. (Atlas World Records)

What makes this record especially meaningful is what it represents. For decades, motorcycle culture has often been portrayed as a male-dominated world. While women have always been riders, builders, racers, and enthusiasts, events like this showcase just how large and passionate the women’s riding community has become. (Atlas World Records)

The sight of more than a thousand motorcycles rolling together must have been incredible. But beyond the numbers, the event highlighted the camaraderie that makes motorcycling special. Riders who may never have met before became part of a shared experience that will be remembered for years to come.

Records are made to be broken, but some accomplishments are about more than setting a number. This one was about visibility, inclusion, and celebrating the freedom that draws all of us to two wheels.

Congratulations to Dawn Kim Van Hoepen and every rider who participated in this historic event. They didn’t just break a record—they showed the world the strength and unity of the motorcycle community.

Ride safe.
