Another lethal left turn for a Florida biker

The deadly “left-turn” crash has claimed another biker’s life — this time in Port Charlotte, Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 66-year-old man riding a Harley-Davidson was killed when a Dodge Ram pickup truck turned left directly into his path at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Veterans Boulevard. Troopers say the truck driver pulled out from a stop sign and attempted the turn as the motorcycle was traveling through the intersection. The biker had no time to avoid the collision.

The rider was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries. The pickup driver reportedly suffered only minor injuries.

For motorcyclists, the left-turn scenario is one of the deadliest crashes on the road — and riders know it all too well. A driver looks, says they “never saw the motorcycle,” and turns anyway. In a split second, a rider’s life is changed forever.

These crashes happen over and over across the country:

  • A car misjudges a motorcycle’s speed
  • A driver looks past the bike instead of for the bike
  • Someone gambles they can make the turn

And the biker pays the price.

Intersections are already dangerous for riders, but left-turn violations remain one of the leading causes of fatal motorcycle crashes in America. Many riders call it the crash they fear most because there’s often nowhere to go and almost no reaction time.

The investigation into the Port Charlotte crash is still ongoing, but for the riding community, the story feels painfully familiar.

Another rider gone.
Another family devastated.
Another “I didn’t see the motorcycle” crash.
