Visiting San Antonio: the Riverwalk’s weird history

Here are some of the weirdest and coolest facts about the San Antonio River Walk that most tourists never hear about:

  • The River Walk exists because of a deadly disaster.
In 1921, a massive flood killed more than 50 people in San Antonio. The original plan was actually to pave over the river downtown and turn it into a sewer tunnel. A local architect named Robert Hugman fought to save it — and basically invented the modern River Walk instead.
  • It’s one level below the city on purpose.
The River Walk feels almost hidden because most of it sits beneath street level. That wasn’t just for atmosphere — it separated pedestrians from vehicle traffic and helped with flood control. Some buildings even have secret-looking “back doors” that open onto the river below street level.
  • The river is partly controlled like a machine.
The water flow downtown is managed with dams, floodgates, and bypass channels. During heavy rain, engineers can redirect water around downtown to stop catastrophic flooding.
  • The River Walk gets drained on purpose.
Every couple years, parts of it are emptied so crews can clean it out. They reportedly find weird stuff constantly: antique weapons, bikes, furniture, strollers, phones, and random junk tossed into the water.
  • Swimming in it is illegal.
A viral TikTok made headlines when someone jumped in looking for a phone. Locals freaked out because the water can contain high bacteria levels, including E. coli. You can actually get fined for getting into the river downtown.
  • Some of the trees are older than Texas itself.
Several bald cypress trees lining the River Walk are hundreds of years old — older than Texas becoming a state in 1845.
  • It was once considered dangerous and sketchy.
Before becoming famous, the river area was known as rough, flood-prone, and unsafe at night. At one point military personnel were even warned to stay away from parts of it.
  • The Spurs celebrated championships on boats there.
The San Antonio Spurs used the River Walk for championship parades after their NBA title wins. Instead of buses, they floated through downtown on barges.
  • There are hidden quieter sections most tourists never see.
Most visitors only know the crowded downtown loop, but the River Walk actually stretches about 15 miles through the city, including the quieter Mission Reach and Museum Reach areas.
  • Locals have a love/hate relationship with it.
Some residents think it’s magical; others joke it’s basically a “fancy drainage ditch.” Reddit threads about the River Walk regularly turn into debates about whether it’s beautiful, overrated, gross, or all three at once.
